πŸ’‘ Highlights

Your college degree shouldn't limit you from the things you want to pursue.

Charm owns 6 businesses despite graduating with a degree in architecture. A business degree isn't necessary for you to build a business. I'm currently taking a degree in political science, but that doesn't limit me from pursuing and learning things that isn't related to my course.

The possibilities are endless when you're an entrepreneur.

It's harder to climb a corporate ladder and Charm finds being an entrepreneur more fulfilling. Most Filipinos are very enterprising, which we can evidently see in times like now where we're in a pandemic.

Utilize your time to develop yourself as a person.

Expose yourself to a lot of experiences and opportunities because these help build you up as a person! Don't limit yourself to what's just in the classroom. Learning is a lifetime process. There are plenty of opportunities out there. Put yourself out there and reach out to other people. I made a video about this the importance of investing in yourself, which you can watch here.

Failure is essential to your growth.

Once you try doing new things, you'll find that you'll fail a lot at the start. A lot of people are ashamed to talk about their failures, but Charm and I believe that it's important to acknowledge them. Failures show that you're putting yourself out there and are trying out new things. They aren't a waste of time because at the end of the day, you can use the lessons you've learned from your failures to inform your future decisions.

It's much easier to be an employee than it is to be a business owner.

When you're an employee, you're mostly just concerned with your own work. There's a lot more responsibility on your shoulders when you're a business owner. You are a job provider, so a lot of people rely on you as their source of income.

Life insurance is not an investment.

A common misconception is viewing life insurance as a vehicle to grow your money. Life insurance is meant to function as a safety net to protect you and your family during times of emergencies. Life insurance gives you a peace of mind.

Avoid lifestyle creep.

Lifestyle creep is when you start buying more things (ex. new car, new house, new phone, etc.) as your income grows larger.

On avoiding impulsive purchases

When feeling the desire to make impulsive purchases, stop and give yourself time to reflect on whether you actually need to buy the item.

Money is a store of value (usually, your time).

I find it helpful to think about the money I have in terms of time. How many hours did I need to work in order to earn a certain amount of money? If your salary is Php100/hr and you want to buy something worth Php1,000, is the item worth exchanging 10 hours of your life for?

Personal finance is just playing mind games with yourself.

Personal finance is simple. It's really important to find what works for you. Tricking your brain to be responsible with your money, such as finding ways to gamifying the process. Charm's boyfriend is really into money challenges (ex. 52-week Money Saving Challenge).

Multitasking can hamper/destroy your productivity.

Multitasking is impossible. I don't understand people who can do it because I personally can't. I make extra efforts in making sure that I'm focusing on one thing at a time, so that I can devote my full attention to the task at hand.

When it comes to earned income, passive income, and business income, aim to have all three.

(1:16:18) Earned income is the salary you earn from your job, which is something that most people have. However, there's a cap on how much earned income you can earn because there's only so many hours in a day you can work. Having additional sources of income through passive income and/or business income is a way of leveraging your time to earn you more money, without necessarily needing to work more.

On minimalism and helping with personal finance

Minimalism isn't necessarily all about having as few items as possible. At it's core, it makes you more intentional with the items that you own and purchase.
